Research Associate: Islamic Terrorism (REMOTE)

The ‘MPOWER Project is an Action Tank/NGO that focuses on research and development of supportive identity, preventing violent extremism (PVE) campaigns that champion personal identity and the power of individual choice while presenting a positive alternative narrative to those who might be vulnerable to extremist recruitment messaging, tactics and ideology. This project aims to take a more human-centric approach to what is generally considered a hard security issue. The 'MPOWER Project builds a framework using the principles of brand marketing, social influencer engagement and creative storytelling to position counter values as alternatives to terrorist and extremist “brands” like ISIS, leveraging technology and social media platforms. We are currently looking for several research associates with an interest in terrorism, far right extremism (alt-right, white supremacy, etc.), and/or the study of radicalization to work remotely in helping complete and maintain our body of research that focuses on our newly coined theory - Identity Vulnerability. 

Job Description: 
  • Open ended research domestically and internationally to help expand our databases in developing the theories and characteristics of extremists and terrorists.
  • Collection of personal data from publicly available resources about known terrorists and far right extremists.
  • Assist in creation of and analysis of known data points
  • If interested, create written reports for publishing based on current data projects
This role will be active as a summer/fall internship, but we are open to students who would like to start earlier and or continue beyond October 31st, 2019. 
Students may receive course credit for internship. Staff will work with the school/advisor on achieving desired learning outcomes and completing all necessary paperwork.
