Biologist-Field Coordinator - 706

We are looking for a full-time Biologist-Field Coordinator with a location in the Rocky Mountain Region. Job Description:
WEST has numerous projects underway and continuing to grow and expand into both the wind market and in other markets as well. WEST is seeking self-motivated candidates who possess the following:
  • Skilled in bird identification and have previous experience conducting avian use surveys at pre & post-construction sites.
  • Experienced in technical writing and managing field work for multiple projects
  • Ability to effectively train, lead and supervise field personnel
  • Candidate(s) must be comfortable and willing to work in various (extreme) weather conditions and terrains and have a passion for the outdoors. Start dates are flexible, within reason, but may start as early as February 6, 2022.
 
Our Biologists work individually, as well as with a team of natural resource specialists, scientists and
biometricians to:
  • Coordinate field-related work for both Pre-construction and Post-construction renewable work.
  • Conduct field-related work including: avian use surveys (i.e., avian point count surveys), acoustic monitoring set up and maintenance, standardized fatality searches (i.e., beneath wind turbines) to locate bird and bat fatalities, and scheduling and conducting bias trials for PCM projects.
  • Conduct training for field technicians on relevant field protocols
  • Organize and review field data
  • Project tracking
  • Draft technical memos and reports
  • Conduct other field work as needed and experience allows

Requirements:
The Biologist we are seeking has a great opportunity to help WEST take the next step in our growth as a full service environmental consulting firm. The successful candidate must be a self-starter who possesses:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree. Preference will be given to Candidates with 2+ years of previous consulting experience or a Master’s degree.
  • Previous experience on biological field studies and/or prior field experience conducting avian surveys required. Experience in bird identification in the region will be given (Rocky Mountains) preference.
  • Proven technical writing, communication, and field management/coordination skills.
  • Skilled use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment is required
  • Must be able to maintain equipment.
  • Must be able to work within a team atmosphere and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, office staff, clients, landowners, and field technicians.
  • Must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots, etc.), clothing, and binoculars.
  • Follow and train field staff on WEST safety protocols.
  • Ability to effectively supervise others
  • Demonstrable ability to coordinate logistics for multiple projects, including vendor outreach, technician coordination, and task scheduling
  • Excellent time management, project management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to travel
 
Physical Requirements:
  • Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys and trainings can be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme.
  • Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (sharp vegetation, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, operating an ATV, dust, extreme heat and cold).
 
After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre- employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required.
